Municipal Management
Based on municipal resolutions, several actions were taken by elected officials and municipal employees to comply with Green Plan recommendations.
- The Town of Bouctouche has become a member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ “Partners for Climate Protection”;
- Municipal buildings are now provided with the proper trash containers to facilitate wet-dry waste separation;
- Ecologo-certified cleaning products are now in use in the maintenance of several municipal buildings;
- A policy to eliminate idling of municipal vehicles was adopted;
- Energy efficiency is a major concern for the municipality since launching the Green Plan and this has given rise to several initiatives over the past 2 years.
- municipal buildings were assessed and some improvements have been brought, including heating systems and windows;
- a refund program reimburses the cost of construction permits to owners of new homes that meet R-2000 certification standards or comply to Energuide 80;
- Efficiency NB, Commission d’aménagement de la région de Kent and the Town of Bouctouche offered a free workshop to local contractors to make them aware of energy efficient practices in building and renovating residential and commercial buildings.
Several studies were also conducted prior to implementing various projects included in the municipality’s Green Plan.
- An inventory was developed of quantities of greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted into the atmosphere by the Town of Bouctouche. These figures will be used to determine short-term and long-term reduction goals.
- An inventory was made of fragile and exceptional natural sites. This will be used as an urban planning tool within municipal boundaries.
- Each and every tree in Bouctouche is recorded as part of a twenty-year management plan for the Town’s urban forest, a joint initiative with Université de Moncton’s Forestry Faculty, Edmundston Campus.
- A study on Bouctouche’s wind-energy potential was conducted in partnership with Université de Moncton’s K.C. Irving Chair in Sustainable Development.
